Earth Day/Month

Hey Clarkies, long time no see! Have you seen the weather this past week?! I sure did. From being all boring and rainy on actual Earth Day, to sunny and 80s on Saturday. If you're anything like me you soaked up the sun and maybe got a little sunburnt. Now that we got the good of the Earth out of the way, lets talk about Earth Day. So what is Earth Day? This is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. So what is Clarke doing to help? Well, if you live in the Res Halls, you may have seen some recycling boxes being more frequent. This strange turn has been due to a competition going on to see which dorm hall can recycle the most. Clarke is also getting a green thumb this summer with the installation of a community garden, more info to come... and GOATS. Yes, you read that right...goats. Clarke University is getting goats to help keep our grounds cleaned up and probably will provide a bit of a comedic aspect to us college kids. Now you may be wondering...man how can I make a sustainable impact even if its a small one? Well listed below are some of the things I do in order to live a sustainable life.

Sustainable Living:

1. Ditch all plastic

Look for brands that contain natural ingredients in the actual product but also recycled plastic and cardboard containers. ALSO DO NOT USE A PLASTIC STRAW PLEASE. Y'all have seen the turtles with straws up their noses. This is cause people just throw that stuff away instead of recycle and it goes into the ocean and animals see it and think its food and then end up dying. So remember that next time you use a straw from the SAC...

2. Use a metal/glass/reusable water bottle

So many bodies of water are filled with uneeded plastic water bottles, but hey news flash plastic is composed very easy and takes years on years. Plus we drink that water that the plastics are in. So just recycle them or don't even use them

3. Use less water

Yep we've all heard this since we were little. But hey just turn the water off when you are brushing your teeth. And take a shorter shower. First cause we need to conserve water but also because it's bad for your skin so save water...please

4. DON'T THROW AWAY BAD FRUITS AND VEGGIES

This one may be a shocker to some but if you have a green thumb and an obsession with plants like me this option helps make a sustainable compost that fun fact you can also donate to local farmers or even your neighbor who has a garden. This helps put nutrients back into our foods that can later benefit us and we are doing good by returning earthy things back to the earth.

Anyways happy late earth day

Ash
